Predicting Access Point Utilization with Locator@CMU, a Centralized 802.11 Wireless Location Service
نویسندگان
چکیده
Locator@CMU is a centralized wireless location service that provides information on all connected 802.11 devices on Carnegie Mellon’s Wireless Andrew network. The basic architecture and functionality of this service are presented. In addition the implementation of a location-based application is discussed. The results are presented in the context of a new location-based service that allows for the determination of the number of clients at an access point at a specified future time. The access points are classified into four categories and results presented based on each type. Our results show that using the Locator@CMU system can predict future access point utilization to 30% accuracy. This work presents the potential foundation for the creation of a system that can be used to .provide this information for interested social or dynamic network configuration programs.

متن کاملAchieving Service Differentiation and High Utilization in IEEE 802.11
Service differentiation in wireless LANs is a growing demand, due to their increasing use for applications with different requirements and the scarcity of wireless channel resources, and is becoming particularly important with the emergence of wireless LAN hotspots. The contribution of this paper is twofold: First, we investigate how various parameters of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol affect ser...
متن کاملEvaluating the Use of Snmp as a Wireless Network Monitoring Tool for Ieee 802.11 Wireless Networks
The increasing popularity of wireless networks has led to instances of high utilization and congestion, some of which have resulted in an interruption of network service. A thorough understanding of how IEEE 802.11 wireless networks operate is crucial to predicting and preventing future interruptions. There have been many studies performed on wireless networks. Of those that have captured data ...
متن کاملA framework for efficient resource management in IEEE 802.11 WLANs
Currently deployed IEEE 802.11 WLANs work mostly with distributed coordination function (DCF) mode at the media access control (MAC) layer, which does not provide quality of service (QoS) support. The upcoming IEEE standard 802.11e achieves service differentiation by assigning different channel access parameters (CAPs) to different traffic classes at the MAC layer. However, such relative differ...
